Ian Malcolm Neil SC

Ian Neil SC is one of Australia’s leading barristers, specialising in employment and industrial law, but also appearing in commercial, equity, and criminal cases, and in commissions and inquiries. He is recognised as a trial and appellate advocate.

He has appeared in the High Court, the Federal Court, Courts of Appeal in New South Wales and Western Australia, and Full Benches of the Fair Work Commission in many of the most significant employment and industrial cases of the last 30 years.

For many years, he has been recognised in Band 1 of Chambers and Partners ranking of silks in the field of employment. He is a co-author of The Modern Contract of Employment, the leading Australian text on employment law, now in its third edition.

He is also an instructor in advocacy, mentors new barristers, and active in pro bono work. Alongside his practice, he is active in the not-for-profit sector, having been the Chair of Grameen Australia, and now a director of the Marrickville Legal Centre, and the Lyrebird Foundation, which is working to empower women from disadvantaged countries and backgrounds by promoting equality, education, and excellence in women’s cricket.
