In less than a year, Alex Di Rosso has gone from breaking news in Western Australia’s major daily newspaper to making news – as winner of the Francis Burt Chambers’ Law Medal.
Since taking out the honour, awarded annually to the Murdoch University Law School’s top graduate, Alex has turned his back on a potential career in journalism (and one of the jobs that helped pay his way through university) to become Associate to the Hon. Justice Gail Archer.
“Writing and current affairs are still interests of mine, but I’ve always had an interest in advocacy – the challenge of thinking on your feet and the ability to make an impact on people’s lives, hopefully for the better.
“Then the more I drilled down into law, the more I found I enjoyed the process of legal problem solving. Resolving disputes is a really important part of having a functioning society, so lawyers can make a great contribution in that regard.”
Away from the law, you’re likely to find Alex with his head buried deep in the pages of a gripping novel (crime or a thriller mostly); swimming in an outdoor pool or the ocean (Leighton’s his favourite beach); or cheering on his beloved Dockers.
While he has a strong interest in social justice and law reform, Alex hasn’t yet planned out his long-term career path, but says his first role as an Associate is providing exposure to a wide variety of practice areas, as well as a friendly and welcoming working environment.
Who knows? Perhaps Alex will find his way to the WA Bar and, for the next couple of years, he’s well-positioned to see some of the very best advocates at work in WA’s Supreme Court – including, of course, members of Francis Burt Chambers!
